Is It Time to Add Air Source Heat Pumps to My Home?

Source Heat Pumps use heat from natural sources like air, ground or water to generate energy needed to provide hot water and central heating for buildings and homes.

What you need to know May 2025

As of the 29th May 2025 the government has introduced new legislation to Permitted Development Rights, making it much easier to install ASHPs to your property without the need for planning permission.

  • Ideal for houses with limited outdoor space, pumps can now be installed within 1m of property boundary
  • Bigger units allowed from 0.6m3 to 1.5m3 suits larger houses needing more powerful systems
  • Two heat pumps for detached homes
  • Air-to-air systems for cooling as an air conditioning alternative
  • Noise level standards updated to ensure all parties are happy

If, however, your home is a listed building or in a conservation area you might still require planning permission from local authorities to introduce these pumps to your home. Always contact experienced consultants like Ellis+Company before undertaking any work on your property.
